What is SAE Viscosity
Grade?
The most widely used system for rating the viscosity of oils was established
by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) in the USA. Simply put, this
is the measure of an oil's thickness and ability to flow to critical lubrication
sites in the engine at certain temperatures and to lubricate when there.
An oil's viscosity rating is often referred to as its grade. There are
two types of viscosity grades--those containing the letter W (for Winter)
and those without the W.
Multigrade oils, such as a SAE 10W-30 oil, satisfy
the viscosity requirements of one of the W grades at low temperature and
one of the non-W grades at high temperature. Multigrade oils are widely
used because they are formulated to allow the engine to start when the
engine is cold but also to maintain sufficien viscosity to protect the
engine at higher temperatures and operating loads. The number before the
W represents its viscosity rating when cold. The number after the W represents
it viscosity rating closer to operating temperatures.
We recommend following the engine manufacturer's
recommendation for viscosity grade when choosing an oil for normal driving
conditions.
Click Viscosity
for more information on the most important property of your engine oil.

Why do I have to
choose a specific Service Class or Category?
An oil may have more than one service class or category. If you click
the dropdown box next to your oil selection you will see if your particular
oil selection has more than one service classification. You must select
one to create your VoxPop® Report because our database search will
compare oil samples that exactly match your SAE viscosity grade and one
specific service classification so that you receive an accurate comparison.
Consult your vehicle owner's manual for
the manufacturer's recommended engine oil service class or category. In
most cases, older-model vehicles can use the newer, higher-rated engine
oil classifications where now obsolete ratings were specified. Newer,
improved oils can also safely be used in older overhauled or antique car
engines as long as the appropriate SAE viscosity grade is used for the
anticipated temperature range.

faster and more efficient. Only one download is needed to obtain all related
files, and file transfer is quicker because the archived files are compressed.
You may use any Zip software to open your downloaded files.
If you do not have Zip software on your computer, you can download a free
version of jZip by clicking the jZip icon from the 'Ordering Information'
screen.
- Click the jZip icon and a window will open to
the jZip website where you can download your free software.
